This interview with dr Anthony Fauci, head of US AIDS research at the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIAID, NIH, i Bethesda, USA was made at the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City in August 2008.
He comments on the global impact of this big AIDS conference, and also on the future prospects of AIDS research and AIDS vaccine trials. Dr Fauci is one of the most respected AIDS adcocates in the world.

The International AIDS Society (IAS) with its headquarter in Geneva, is one of the most important international organizaions on HIV/AIDS, as organizer of the big International AIDS Conferences. One of the co-founders of IAS in 1988, was dr. Lars Olof Kallings, Sweden. In this recent interview, made in Mach 2008, he explains how IAS was started in a small basement in Stockholm, Sweden with only one employee, Josephine Rudebeck, who is also featured in this interview made at the original location of the first IAS office in Stockhholm, Sweden.

On December 11 2008, the United Nations appointed Michel Sidibe, of Mali, as its top official in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. He will start as Executive Director of UNAIDS in Geneva in January 2009, replacing Peter Piot of Belgium. Sidibe has been the deputy at UNAIDS for Peter Piot during the last year. This year the Nobel prize was awarded for HIV/AIDS for the first time in the category Medicine and Physiology. It was awarded to the two discoverers of the HIV virus, dr. Luc Montagnier, World AIDS Foundation, Paris, and dr. Francoise Barre-Sinoussi, the Pasteur Institute in Paris. Dr. Seth Berkley founded the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, IAVI, in 1996 and received the first major fundiung in 1998 from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He is the CEO of IAVI, which has its headquarter in New York. IAVI is a key organization in the global effort to develop an AIDS vaccine which is working. In spite of failures to develop a functioning AIDS vaccine in 2007-2008, the effort continues.

Jonathan Mann, a medical scientist and doctor from the US, became the first Director of the World Health Organization's Global Program on AIDS in 1985.
