Partners and collaborators to the Face of AIDS Foundation

The Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden's main medical university, mostly known for awarding the Nobel Prize in Medicine, was Face of AIDS Foundation's first partner in 1988. The former Karolinska president dr. Hans Wigzell, was co-founder of the Face of AIDS Foundation, which owns and runs the documentation. He is still supervisor of the Foundation. The present president dr. Harriet Wallberg-Henriksson is a strong supporter of the Face of AIDS project. Dr. Carl Johan Sundberg is the Karolinska coordinator for the partnership. In April 2008 a new agreement of collaboration was signed by the Karolinska Institutet and the Face of AIDS Foundation.
During 2008 the Karolinska Institutet also gave Face of AIDS a contribution to develop the film archive further. The Karolinska Institutet brings to the Face of AIDS project both credibility of the ongoing documentation as well as expertise in the global AIDS-arena. The Institute has been in the frontline of international AIDS research from the very start of the AIDS pandemic in the early 80's. During 2008, the Face of AIDS Foundation also produced a presentation film for the Karolinska Institute as well as a documentary on the visit made by a high level delegation from the Karolinska Institutet to Uganda and Tanzania. The delegation was led by the President harriet Wallberg-Henriksson. Karolinska also highlighted the importance of AIDS-research by awarding the 2008 Nobel Prize in Medicine to be jointly shared by dr. Luc Montagnier and dr. Francoie Barré-Sinnousi, for the discovery of the HIV-virus in 1983 at the Pasteur Institute, in Paris.
The Karolinska Institutet will be the first medical university to design a special curriculum for undergraduates and graduate students, based on the Face of AIDS film archive. The curriculum is planned to be launched during the 2009 autumn semester. Research and editing of tailormade curriculum-films fro, the Face of AIDS film archive, will take place during the spring of 2009. After evaluation, the curriculum will be offered to universities and colleges worldwide. Some 20 specially edited educational films will be edited to the curriculum on "Lessons Learned – Looking into the Future".

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Sweden has been a key partner to Face of AIDS since the year 2000. Among films funded by the ministry are: Documentation of the United Nations Special session on AIDS (UNGASS) in 2001, and documentary films which Face of AIDS produced for the XV International AIDS Conference in Bangkok 2004, "Global Youth Fighting HIV/AIDS", and for the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto 2006, "Standing up for HIV Prevention". During 2008 the Ministry funded a film to the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City, August 2008, "Women at the Frontline" on women living with HIV and AIDS in the world. The film was screened at the Closing Plenary Session at the Mexico AIDS Conference, August 8, 2008. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Sweden is also an important institution in the international AIDS arena, along with the Swedish. International Development Agency, being one of the major donors for the fight against HIV/AIDS in the global arena.

The Swedish National Archives became a partner to Face of AIDS Foundation in 2004. The Archive is contributing its expertise and experience in the process of digital archiving and is also advising Face of AIDS how to develop, curate and manage its existing digital film repository. All the original Face of AIDS film material from the 21 years of filming since 1987, is stored at the National Archives.

UNAIDS: The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS

UNAIDS: The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS in Geneva, has collaborated with the Face of AIDS documentation project since 1996. Before the establishment of UNAIDS in 1996, Face of AIDS collaborated with its predecessor, the WHO Global Program on AIDS. In 2006 the collaboration developed further. Face of AIDS produced in partnership with UNAIDS, a documentary "Standing up for HIV Prevention" to the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto, August 2006. The Face of AIDS also produced a DVD companion to the 2006 UNAIDS Epidemic Update. In 2007, Face of AIDS produced a short World AIDS Day documentary for UNAIDS.
During 2007 Face of AIDS got an important grant from UNAIDS. This grant made it possible for Face of AIDS to digitize, structure and make security copies of the earliest material in its film archive. The grant also made it possible to develop a Beta-version of the Face of AIDS website, containing edited films from the film archive. The Beta-version of the website, www.faceofaids.org, was launched in connection with the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexco City, August 2008, containing 45 films. The launch of the Website was a major step forward for Face of AIDS, in reaching the goal of the project. The goal is to develop the exising film archive into a world leading digital web-based educational, information and research tool on HIV/AIDS, using film as its medium. Mr. Htin Aung, the UNAIDS web platform manager in Geneva, has been instrumental in advising and guiding the Face of AIDS web-team in developing the website. In December 2008, almost 100 webfilms were uploaded at the website.

International AIDS Society (IAS)

The Face of AIDS has developed a long term collaboration with the International AIDS Society, (IAS), which is the key organizer of the International AIDS Conferences. IAS was originally co-founded in 1988 by Dr. Lars Olof Kallings, former director of the Swedish Center for Disease Control. He has been very instrumental in supporting Face of AIDS documentation from 1988 and onwards. During 2008 Face of AIDS co-produced a documentary on the history of the International AIDS Conferences, together with Mondopop Production and Pierre Peyroth in Bangkok. The film was released in connection with the 20 year anniversary of IAS in 2008, celebrated during the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City, August 2008. AIDS-conference. The film tells the sometimes dramatic story on how the International AIDS Conferences has served as time markers for the development of the AIDS Pandemic. Face of AIDS was also assigned by IASD to document milestones and key persons at the Mexico City AIDS-conference. The documentation resulted in 35 hours of new film material, which now has been added to the film archive.
